Billbong PRO 2009

Kelly Slater the top seed in revised heat draw

Kelly Slater (USA) will be the top seed for the US $400 000 Billabong Pro J-Bay when the world’s best surfers take to the waves of Supertubes in Jeffreys Bay on Thursday for Stop No. 4 of 10 on the 2010 ASP World Tour, the global series of events that determines surfing’s annual world champion.

Defending J-Bay Champ, Parko, withdraws from Billabong PRO

(Friday, July 9th, 2010) Defending event champion and Billabong surfer, Joel Parkinson (29, Gold Coast, Qld AUS), has officially pulled out of next week’s Billabong Pro at Jeffreys Bay, South Africa, after badly slicing his foot while surfing at Snapper Rocks today.

Billabong PRO Day 2 images

Realized that I am short a couple of pics from the Bong 2009 on jbaysurfcam.com so uploaded them promptly. (Check link at bottom of this post.)

So here's some photos of Day 2 so long. I've had a couple of requests for more pulled back shots of Day 2, since it has been called "one the best wave conditions we ever had on tour" by guys like Kelly Slater, and will be going though the images and get a couple that's uncropped.

You have to understand that I live and surf in J-Bay, and that I often forget how good the swell is because I see it as normal. That little bit of swell we had on day two was not close to the perfect swell we had on the day of the Xcel Supertubes showdown. Day 2 was definitely great conditions, but it wasn't all that consistent all the time and the swell dissipated halfway during the next day. I think everybody was just so amped and fired up to see good swell that they maybe boosted it a little too much. My opinion anyway, and I lift it on my own website.

The short and long is that I will go and get a couple of zoomed out shots and also upload them later on from the shoot. I was so stoked with the supreme image quality the proper camera and optics gave me, that I cropped many of the shots, removing the overall perspective of how big and perfect those waves actually were. The pics of day 2 are here.

Parko Won and I am falling asleep

If you don't know yet, Parko is the winner of the 2009 Billbabong PRO Jeffreys Bay. The waves were a little inconsistent today and and only a few sets like what we had on 14 July. (Yesterday) Now busy sifting through photos to get a couple of good ones for slideshows on wavescape and to upload to here. Alas, I am so tired I am falling asleep! Don't let anybody tell you surf photography is easy or glamarous. It's not, until you land that frontpage shot that is...

Billabong PRO 2009 second successful day

Wow! What a day of awesome surfing, good weather, bad weather and HUGE waves!

A couple of upsets like Holmsie that removed Taj from the race and ten point rides going down as if it is the norm.

Tomorrow we only have two heats left of round three and then it is the quarter final, semi and finals so a winner should be crowned somewhere around lunch time.

Don't miss it. I'll upload some photo highlights as soon as I processed them.
