The Debt O meter and commenting

I added two new features to jbaysurfcam.com. Commenting and the Equipment Debt O Meter.

I am in the process of migrating one of my clients, wavescape.co.za, to a new server and we are also upgrading the CMS. As a result,  Jbaysurfcam.com is becoming a bit of a testbed for certain things I want to do with my clients' websites. Reasons include that it is a fairly large website with heaps of traffic and I own it so if I really mess it up, no client will be upset with me. I have introduced commenting on wavescape a while back, but have not tested it on the new system that jbaysurfcam.com is running on, so hence the commenting feature suddenly. It's something I wanted to add to jbaysurfcam.com long ago, so there you go. Leave a comment.

As some of you know, photography is not for the faint hearted and it often results in the photographer's range of equipment is very connected to the loan he is currently paying off. After some thought, I decided to introduce the Equipment Debt O'meter! (how should I spell this btw.) Tadaaaa! At this point you are probably thinking I am getting corny, but hear me out. I have about R 100 000 debt that I need to pay off. Fortunately I got the money as an interest free loan. I am paying this loan back little by little, and whenever I get any money for selling photos or doing a session, I use that money directly to pay off my equipment. You will find the debt o meter at the bottom of each page. With the current loan, I have only paid off R 2000 so far. I could do many sessions, or sell 2000 photos for R 50 each or whatever, but you will always be able to come and check how I am doing with paying off my debt. Debt is a very personal matter for most people. I decided it's my freay way to share my life a little with you guys. Don't feel sorry for me though, I have made the choice and commitment to do this thing, and I love doing surf photography.

Remember, I am not a full time photographer but a web developer and audio visual engineer, so this is not my primary source of income. Lately I'm also beginning to feel the water in other forms of sport photography and candid children portraits etc. For now I am keeping myself out of the wedding scene...

That's it. Adios Amigos.

Dag Paul. Jacques
