St. Francis Resort 2010 SA Longboard Championships by Oxbow a great success.

_DSC3054Matthew_MoirThe St. Francis Resort 2010 SA Longboard Championships by Oxbow concluded in classic surf conditions at Seal Point in Cape St. Francis on Saturday 1 May 2010.

Eastern Province, who was the host of the event, was dethroned by Western Province with a mere 36 000 points out of a total competition scoring count of 2 million points. In third place was  KZN with Southern Cape taking up fourth.

_DSC7576Simone_RobbTotal surfing hours was close to 60 and heats ran from 26 April to 1 May 2010.  Entire surfing families took part in this one of a kind contest with 200 contestants and it was truly an event for the whole family which caters for all age groups. The oldest surfer was reported to be 68 while the youngest was just 12.
_DSC7631Tobias_SchreuderOn the Monday afternoon the Rugby legends had a fun heat where they showed off their surfing skills which entertained a huge crowd and made headlines around the country.
In the evenings there were lots of social events featuring several live bands.
On Monday evening, a Rugby Legends dinner fund-raiser was held with names like AJ Venter, Percy Montgomery, Garth Wright, Warren Broznihan, Andy Marinos, Peter DeVilliers and Rob Louwe in the mix.
The weather conditions held for most of the week and the worst day was probably Wednesday when  the event was placed on hold in the afternoon due to heavy onshore winds and lack of good surf-able waves. With surf sometimes on the heavy side, a couple of boards were broken and there were a few stitches here and there due to rock cuts or bad wipe-outs.

For the first time in the event´s history, saltsurfmag.com streamed the event live to the internet in collaboration with jbaysurfcam.com. People from all over South Africa, Australia and New Zealand logged onto saltsurfmag.com and watched all the action as it happened right up to the last heat.

_DSC8002Sunrise_at_SealsConditions got better and better towards the last day and the finals were completed in glassy 3ft conditions with a light offshore after which all the contestants and their families gathered at the Resort´s restaurant and conference facility for the prize giving and awards ceremony.
Sponsors like Firewire, Element, Dakine, RVCA, KUSTOM and NEW BALANCE provided some great prizes for all the finalists.

Winners of the respective divisions are as follows:
Girls – Faye Zoetmulder, Ladies – Simone Robb, Senior Ladies – Margot Saunders, Boys – Daniel Buitendag, Junior Boys – Scott Lefevre, Open Division – Matthew Moir, Masters – Matthew Moir, Grand Masters – Criag Cuff, Seniors Division – Craig Daniels, Veterans – Gregg Smith, Super Veterans – Jonanthan Paarman, Legends – Mush Hide, Super Legends – Greg Stokes
